Changing Economy

Pennsylvania is home to some of the top four-year universities in the country, including several in western Pennsylvania.  As the Vice Chair of the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA), I am proud of the work being done by PHEAA to help as many Pennsylvania students realize their dreams of attending a four-year school, and in many cases, one of the fine institutions here in Pennsylvania, and to help with the affordability of college for families across the Commonwealth.

While a post-secondary education is paramount for many, some are not interested in pursuing a four-year degree.  There are two-year associate degree programs and certificate programs available at many institutions that teach skills designed to be taken directly into a specific job category that some students gravitate towards.  Many younger students that do not attend a four-year school attend a community college, like Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC), to earn a two-year associate degree.  Others interested in working in a trade industry can and do attend a school like Rosedale Technical College and some look for training through the Builders Guild of Western PA to work in the construction and building trades.   

With the growth of the Marcellus Shale industry and with manufacturing jobs returning to our country, many associate and certificate programs are being created to better match workers to the jobs that need filled today, and in a more expedited manner.  In the case of Rosedale, they have launched new training programs to help prepare students for the jobs of today.  The Bidwell Training Center, located in the city of Pittsburgh’s Manchester neighborhood, works directly with employers in our region who are having difficulty finding trained workers for jobs that need filled today to create a curriculum that enables students to move easily into jobs once training is complete.  Companies that take this initiative are being rewarded with a workforce that is trained specifically for the jobs they have available today.

As the unemployment rate spiked up during the Great Recession, many workers were displaced in ways very similar to what happened in our region during the collapse of the Steel Industry.  The unemployment rate has begun to tick back up after coming down significantly from the worst of the recession.  The fact is the unemployment rate remains far too high.  There are many current openings but companies continue to have trouble filling them due to the high numbers of candidates who don’t possess the appropriate skills.  Even workers who possess bachelor’s degrees have had to retrain in cases where their job has been lost and is not coming back.

It is difficult in many ways for someone with a career in one field, to retrain for a career in a completely different field, especially when someone has worked in one field for such a long time period.  Institutions like the ones mentioned above, and others, can help with the retraining.  Our federal and state governments need to do more to help older workers retrain for the jobs that need filled today and we need to be encouraging and promoting better collaboration between employers and academic institutions to ensure that curriculum development is in line with workforce needs.

This list now has 104 organizations with well over 6,400 jobs that need filled.  When you click on the link for each company, you will be directed to each company’s employment section where you can view open positions and apply online.  The open positions in this listing represent blue-collar and white-collar jobs, temporary and permanent, part- and full-time positions.  In some cases, candidates’ skill sets may not match exactly what employers are looking for.  Please know that retraining options are out there and that I will continue advocating for programmatic and funding solutions that help better connect potential workers to the jobs that need filled.

PHEAA Job Fair

The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) is hosting a Job Fair to fill full-time, entry-level positions for Call Center Representatives/Loan Counselors at its Parkway Center facility, located at 11 Parkway Center in Green Tree.  The Job Fair is scheduled for Wednesday, October 8th from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. in Suite 110.  Representatives from PHEAA’s Human Resources and FedLoan Servicing departments will be available to provide information about employment opportunities, answer questions and conduct on-site interviews.

As Vice-Chair of PHEAA’s Board of Directors, I was pleased to announce the opening of this new Customer Service Center last fall.  With the help of skilled workers from right here in western Pennsylvania, this Customer Service Center is helping PHEAA continue to provide the best possible customer service to millions of student loan borrowers throughout the region, the Commonwealth and the nation.  These workers, and this facility, help PHEAA service its growing portfolio of federally-owned student loans for nearly six million borrowers.

WestPACS Job & Internship Fair

The Western Pennsylvania Career Services Association (WestPACS) is hosting the Western PA Collegiate Job & Internship Fair on October 15th from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Monroeville Convention Center.  WestPACS is an independent, nonprofit consortium of career services professionals representing 45 member community colleges, colleges, and universities of western Pennsylvania.  This collaborative effort connects regional employers and job seekers and the event provides career opportunities to college students seeking internships as well as college graduates looking for new opportunities.  More than 100 employers are expected to be in attendance.
